Rhino Records announced they will be releasing a double disc
JOSH ROUSE retrospective album on September 9th. The discs will span Rouse’s nearly 7 years on the
Rykodisc label where he put out some of his most memorable work.
Selections from his solo albums, Dressed Up Like Nebraska, Home, Under Cold Blue Stars (my personal favorite), 1972, and Nashville will appear on the anthology’s first disc along with Chester an early EP where he collaborates with Lambchop’s own Kurt Wagner. The second disc will highlight Rouse’s more rare releases including his most recent EP, Bedroom Classics Vol 1., demos and unreleased tracks.
Rhino has set up some listening parties so you can get your Rouse on until September 9th.

KINGS OF LEON debuted their new video for “Sex On Fire”, the first single from their forthcoming album Only By The Night. It’s a bit of a departure for the band, having sexual connotations in this video where they haven’t before in previous vids. But with a song called “Sex On Fire” it’s probably safe and responsible to do so.
The Followill brothers give us the impression that writhing on beds, getting water doused on their heads, eating chicken(?), and belching out some sort of black demon smoke means sexy. More »

When
READ YELLOW broke up this past winter, they left a hole. Sometimes
take-off-your-pants-and-dance hole, but a void nonetheless.
For those interested in wondering what members of the group have been up to since disbanding, take comfort that half them have a new band, Bodega Girls. Yellow’s former lead singer, Evan Kenny and bassist Michelle Kay make up half the Bodega Girls, A weird mix of what’s they describe on their Myspace page as:
Twisted throwback-Jersey disco with a stammering Chic-meets-Clash backbeat. Brennan sings about a Lexington white girl who enjoys walks on the wild side involving the Western Front, snorting coke, blowing the DJ — and, of course, hooking up with, uh, African-Americans.
It seems like a wild idea that shouldn’t work but with the aim to be the “musical manifestation of hedonism,” it’s definitely something you can’t take your eyes off, or ears for that matter. Bodega Girls, it might just be your next guilty pleasure. And hey, Bob Dylan meets Junior Senior could be a new genre in music.

During the twelve songs
PEOPLE IN PLANES performed for the early set at
Mercury Lounge Monday evening, the band effortlessly patch-worked together numerous colorful bits of apparently unrelated styles and across-the-board influences. The five Welsh gents of this group expertly embrace a concoction of genres and musical texturing, resulting in solid one-of-a-kind songwriting, and simply riveting stage energy.
The set’s selections drew from a huge spectrum of styles, ranging from Smashing Pumpkins-infused classic rock, to development of a unique head-banging Brit-pop/Pantera hybrid. (Yea…what?) It is no wonder this band has become known for their distinctive contribution to the modern British musical invasion. Even tunes with the most minimalist of structures were overlaid with fascinating instrumental detailing, frequently including whimsical secondary guitar melodies, and going as far as the addition of unexpected synth-fem background vocals. Singer Gareth Jones’ creates variety both in terms of lyrical interest and tone, and just as the instrumental compositions drew from many eras and areas for inspiration, his melodies and phrasing suggested greats including (but not limited to) Thom Yorke, Omar Rodriguez, Ozzy Osbourne, and Billy Corgan. Last night,
Conrad Keely and
Jason Reece brought …AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD back to their original two piece form, switching up which instruments they played throughout the night. The band rocked just as hard as being a 10 piece with two full drum kits.
The seemingly short set featured classics like “Source Tags And Codes” and “Another Morning Stoner” (which was loosely dedicated to Buddha and the Dalai Lama) as well as some older tracks from Madonna, and one new song. The new track was performed with Keely on keyboard and Reece on drums, despite being stripped to two instruments, the song had a really heavy sound with nice vocal melodies. The song sounded awesome and it will be interesting to see how the song sounds with a full band.
Opening the show was SHOCK CINEMA who Conrad also performed keyboards with. The band had a very dense spacey indie rock sound that was well matched with the female vocalist. Definitely a band to watch out for.

Well, maybe their similarities end with just the press photos, you can be the judge of that. UNITED NATIONS are a hard/grindcore side project. There’s been speculation as to who is actually in this band for months.
The only actual member in the band we know of is Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly. Rickly has become the unofficial spokesperson/leader of the band since the rest of them are under contract with different labels and therefore haven’t revealed their true identities, let alone given interviews.
But after a quick browse of some message boards, the same few recurring bands/names come up - Daryl Palumbo (Head Automatica, Glassjaw), members from Converge, as well as members from The #12 Looks Like You and Made Out Of Babies all get mentions. Though we may never know the true identity of this band, we have one thing going for us…some new music! Their new album is streaming on the band’s Myspace page and on September 9th, we can all have it in our hands thanks to Eyeball Records.

This weekend, IFC Channel debuted it’s new original comedy series, Z Rock. The show is basically about a rock band that leads a double life. By night, they are a Brooklyn-based rock band ZO2. By day they are trying to make ends meet by performing as a kid party band, The Z Brothers.
The trio is two brothers and their lifelong friend as they take a satirical look at the underbelly of rock, hauling gear, dealing with overly aggressive club owners, and a manager that likes to attend temple for the connections, (she got them an opening spot for Kiss by eating Gefilte fish with Paul Stanley’s mother). Similar shows have existed, the two we think of most are Flight Of The Conchords, and Tenacious D. However, unlike those shows, Z Rock has a harder more rock edge to it unlike FOC’s gullibility and The D’s brazen fanboyism. The likes of Joan Rivers, Dave Navarro, Gilbert Gottfried, Greg Giraldo, and Sebastian Bach all make appearances working to round out the mix of celebrity and comedy. Catch the trailer after the jump. And if you live in the NYC area, you can easily recognize the clubs and scenes since the show is shot on location, including radio station WFUV, and Southpaw night club. More »
